# Michigan gas and petroleum pipelines

## Michigan pipelines: which law?

A new pipeline can affect your land, water, safety, and bill. What it carries matters. Michigan's Act 9 concerns certain natural-gas pipelines. Act 16 concerns petroleum. The MPSC makes some state decisions about where these pipes may be built.

## Several decisions, one pipe

Route approval doesn't settle every question. Other decisions concern safety, environmental permits, land rights, and what customers pay. Interstate natural-gas projects generally involve the federal energy regulator, FERC.

## Line 5 is petroleum

Line 5 carries crude oil and natural gas liquids. Its replacement case uses Act 16. Michigan's Supreme Court set aside the earlier approval in July 2026 and required further review. That didn't decide the eventual outcome.

## Find your own decision

Consumers Energy's Line 300 proposal is a natural-gas example. An application is a request, not approval. For a project near you, find the current map and decision. A public comment explains a concern; becoming a formal party has different rules and responsibilities.
